A mate of mine in Shoal Bay had been dealing with a dodgy back door for the best part of two years. Old timber slider that had swollen so bad from the humidity that he had to lift it off the track every time he wanted to get out to the deck. One afternoon the whole thing came off the rail and landed on his foot. That’s when he finally rang us.
We replaced it with an aluminium sliding door – three panels, matt black, nice wide opening straight onto the deck with the water in the background. He called me about a month later and said he’d had more barbeques in that month then he’d had in the previous year because the back of the house was actually useable again. Bi-fold doors are what you want when you need to completely open up a wall. They fold back and stack to one side, giving you an uninterupted opening between inside and outside. In a place like Port Stephens where the whole point of living here is the outdoor lifestyle, bi-folds make total sense.
I’ll be honest though – bi-folds are more expensive then sliding doors and they need the tracks kept clean to fold properly. Salt and sand can build up in the tracks quicker here then in other areas, so a quick vacuum every few weeks is a good idea. But when there right for the space, nothing else comes close.
We did a bi-fold install for a couple in Anna Bay that opened there whole living area onto a north-facing deck. They told us it was the best decision they made during the whole renovation. The house went from feeling dark and closed in to completely open and airy.

Hinged and Pivot Doors
Hinged doors including french door styles work well for homes that suit a more traditional look. There’s quite a few older character homes scattered around Raymond Terrace and the western side of Port Stephens where a classic hinged door fits the style.
